Everyone is probably familiar with Berlin as a federal and state capital, but probably less so with the district of Lichtenberg.
Lichtenberg is the 11th district of Berlin. It was created in 2001 through the merger of the previously independent districts of Lichtenberg and Hohenschönhausen. All districts of today’s borough have been part of the Berlin city area since the founding of Greater Berlin in 1920, including the eponymous district of Lichtenberg.
In the east of Berlin, the district attracts visitors above all with its extensive zoo. The park-like grounds are home to numerous exotic animals and Friedrichsfelde Palace, which now houses a museum.
The district gained inglorious fame as the seat of the former headquarters of the Ministry for State Security of the GDR (MfS).
Today, the former MfS is a museum and houses espionage equipment and an archive. The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen memorial, once a prison, can be visited as part of a guided tour.
