New Dream Car report complements ICV publication series
Ensuring controlling excellence despite demographic challenges

Demographic change is already having a noticeable impact on finance and controlling departments: vacancies remain unfilled, the average age in many teams is rising and, at the same time, the need for data- and AI-savvy skills is growing. The new DREAM-CAR report from the ICV 2025/2026 ideas workshop addresses precisely these developments.
The Internationaler Controller Verein e.V. (ICV) has published a practical guide entitled “Ensuring controlling excellence despite demographic challenges”, which shows how companies and controlling organizations can respond to these structural changes.
The focus is on three specific solutions:
1. use AI in controlling
This book examines areas of application, prerequisites, opportunities and limitations of the use of AI in controlling. It is not about abstract future scenarios, but about the question of how AI can help to keep controlling work efficient despite scarce human resources.
2. targeted use of human resources
Another focus is on the strategic development of employees and organizations. Topics covered include
- the attractiveness of the controller role,
- Strategic personnel planning,
- Skills development and further training and
- the possibilities of shared service centers abroad.
The book thus addresses key challenges faced by many companies that are already competing for qualified specialists.
3. rethink leadership and management
The third thematic block is dedicated to the interaction between different generations in the company. The concept of “generational leadership” is intended to enable constructive collaboration between different generations and also takes into account the integration of AI agents.
The combination of scientific classification, empirical data bases and concrete practical experience is particularly valuable. Companies such as ALBO Solutions, Beiersdorf, DATEV, Deutsche Telekom, Gerresheimer and TRUMPF provide insights into their approaches and experiences.
This volume is aimed at controllers and managers in finance organizations who are looking for guidance for the organizational and technical development of their departments. At the same time, the book also shows perspectives for personal development paths in controlling.
