Managing the sustainability performance of companies in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals and the role of controlling
ICV Live Webinar
The lecture presents the results of an empirical study that uses a case study methodology to examine the implementation of strategic sustainability management, the managemenrt of sustainability performance and the role of controlling at five German companies (BASF, Deutsche Post DHL, Evonik Industries, Merck and Vaude).
The study shows that controlling plays a crucial role in the realization of sustainable development and the SDGs in companies. In all of the companies examined, the controlling function is integrated into important areas of the implementation of strategic sustainability management and the control of sustainability performance. However, the analysis shows that the degree of integration of controlling in the companies examined varies.
Based on this result, the study develops a generic maturity model for strategic sustainability management, the management of sustainability performance and the inclusion of controlling, which covers four levels
(1) external reporting,
2) strategic thinking
(3) company-wide integration and
(4) including Business Partnering.
