BREXIT – POSSIBLE IMPACT ON EUROPEAN COMPANIES |
"Mayday in London" |
On Wednesday, March 29 2017, the British Prime Minister formally initiated the procedure for the United Kingdom to exit the European Union. ICV ControllingBlog asked Paul Moody about the possible impact on European companies, and how they can equip themselves to cope. "Theresa May put it very clearly and succinctly at the end of March: the UK will leave the EU with all the consequences that entails. Also, the United Kingdom wishes to exit the customs union and the European single market. I admit that in light of this, “Mayday” is a rather cynical, but also appropriate, play on words."

EUROBAROMETER SURVEY 2016 |
Not national, but European identity |
Eurobarometer survey from November 2016: not only German or Belgian, but European - EU citizens characterize themselves both as of a national and a European identity. At the same time the share of those who feel pre-dominantly citizens of their respective country has been constantly decreasing for the past 10 years. For example in Germany in 1996 50% of the people interview in Germany defined themselves only as German – now it’s only 25%. French people felt mostly Europeans also 20 years ago and this hasn’t changed much now. An exception to this trend is Greece, where the majority of people do not feel European. The weak identification is not new; even before the crisis the Greeks already felt much more Greek than European.

TECHNOLOGY A SIGNIFICANT ENABLER FRAUDSTERS |
Companies Failing to Leverage Technology to Combat Fraud |
According to a new report by KPMG, technology was found to be a significant enabler for a quarter (24%) of the 750 fraudsters investigated by forensic specialists across 81 countries. By contrast, the Global Profiles of the Fraudster report reveals that not enough proactive analytics are utilised in detecting fraud, with only three percent of the fraudsters being detected in this manner. “The double edged sword of technology in fraud is only going to get sharper” said Phil Ostwalt, Global Head of Investigations at KPMG: “As technology becomes more advanced, so too do the schemes to use it maliciously. And while it’s clear that fraudsters are all too comfortable making use of technology to perpetrate a fraud, we are seeing little evidence that companies are doing the same to prevent it. Threat-monitoring systems and data analytics are a must have for organisations on the look-out for anomalous or suspicious behaviour.”
