NEWSLETTER OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONTROLLING COMMUNITY Monday, Jan. 23rd, 2017

Hello,

world politics and economy remain unpredictable: Companies should develop an individual digitization strategy and keep costs in mind. Unexpected election results, economic and political crises, as well as the smoldering conflicts in the world, make it almost impossible for medium and long-term business planning. For this reason, companies should always be able to adapt flexibly to uncertainties. Besides there is also the fast-paced digitalization with its abrupt technology development. For companies without a suitable digital strategy, this can mean a fast turnaround. After all, the issue of digitalization has arrived into companies. 69 percent see now technological change as an opportunity, but only a quarter of them believe they are well prepared for it. The experts from Roland Berger and the International Association of Controllers (ICV) show in their new "Operations Efficiency Radar - the top leverage for the CFO Agenda 2017" the focus areas of top managers in this challenging environment for the year 2017 and where there is need to catch up.

PWC’S PREDICTIONS FOR 2017

Global economic themes to be crucial in 2017
As we enter the New Year, PwC’s economists have once again peered into their crystal ball to make their predictions for 2017. They focused on some topics that will be important for the economy and business in 2017. Among them are globalization, US monetary policy or politics drives uncertainty and economics.
Looking back on 2016, many of PwC’s predictions held true. Commodity prices have remained low, the US raised interest rates and geopolitics has come under the spotlight. Specifically, the PwC experts correctly predicted that the peripheral Eurozone economies would outpace core growth at 2% compared to 1.5%. In 2016, the periphery is expected to have grown by 2.2% and the core by 1.4%. Then total unemployment in the Eurozone fell as predicted to below 17 million, its annual lowest levels since 2011. Preliminary data suggest unemployment is almost at 16 million. Last but not least PwC expected India to lead E7 growth at over 7.5%, while Chinese growth would slow to around 6.5% per annum.

NEW BOOK: RIDING THE TIGER

India as an opportunity and a challenge for businesses
Despite being very attractive to foreign firms, India is not an easy market to develop. India is already the seventh largest economy in the world and looks set to climb further up the global rankings. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts more than 7 percent annual growth for India's gross domestic product (GDP) through the end of the decade. With economic output thus set to total some 3.3 trillion dollars by 2020, the country will have the same level of GDP as Germany in 2015. This makes it an exciting potential market for foreign firms, especially those operating in the automotive sector, the chemical and pharmaceutical industry and the medical device business – but it is also a difficult territory to conquer with numerous obstacles to be overcome. Author Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Partner with Roland Berger in India, portrays the challenges and illustrates how they can be mastered in his new book, Riding the Tiger.
