NEWSLETTER OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONTROLLING COMMUNITY |
Wednesday, 2016-11-16 |
Hello,
the International Association of Controllers (ICV) preparations for the 42nd Controller Congress are in full swing! This time we focus on internationalization – there is even more work than usual because for the first time all speeches in plenum will be translated into English for our participants from the non-German speaking countries. On Monday afternoon there will also be an English speaking session center.
We can’t wait to meet you all at the Congress – also those who so far couldn’t participate in the biggest meeting of the controlling community because of not knowing the German language. See you all on May 15-16, 2017 in Munich!
By then – please find information about other ICV events and activities in these E-News!

"Digitization as one of the most important economic trends" |
Digitization is an extensive topic which has already brought far-reaching consequences. In the retail sector, companies such as Amazon or eBay have used the possibilities provided by digitization to design their Internet-based business models and are now hugely successful. Outside of the retail sector, further examples of the potential for change in business models inherent in digitization are Netflix or Airbnb. In general, the “business model” is a simplified way of describing the activities of a company to create profit and consists of a number of different components. Companies must identify the potentials of digitization and adapt their business models in order to tap them. This process raises many business management questions, and it is these which form the basis for the latest annual topic of the Dream Factory and the ICV: Digital business model innovations and the role of the controller.

ROLAND BERGER: DIGITAL PLATFORMS AS DRIVERS OF GROWTH AND INNOVATION |
"Europe must take action to stay competitive in the global Internet economy" |
Digital platforms and their business models are conquering industry after industry, region after region, market after market. Without platforms, nothing runs on the Internet any more, while the "old economy" too is increasingly dependent on their capabilities. Commercial users need them as an intermediary to their customers. Private users need them to access information, source content and communicate with each other. Digital platforms bundle and broker virtually all interactions in the Internet economy and connected society. They are powerful drivers of innovation, productivity and growth, with numerous market players and entire economies benefiting from the value they add. Today, six of the ten most valuable companies in the world – and four of the five strongest brands – are digital platforms. Key performance indicators such as growth in revenue and market capitalization show that they have long since overtaken the big industrial groups.

PwC: TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES INFLUENCE THE JOB MARKET |
Rise of the robots – good news or bad for business and society? |
In 2005 there were less than one million of them. Today there are 1.8 million. And in three years’ time, this will soar to around 2.6 million. Industrial robots are on the march. Technology already plays a major role in the manufacturing sector. But as robots become better and more sophisticated, PwC economists expect their impact to gradually permeate more industries – including the services sector, which accounts for most jobs in industrialized economies. Business leaders are already taking note of these changes and are factoring it into their corporate strategy. The PWC 2016 global CEO survey shows that 77% of CEOs think that technological progress is the megatrend most likely to transform how businesses interact with their stakeholders.
