ICV HOMEPAGE: CONTROLLING KNOW-HOW |
Video: Why do we need controllers? |
Controllers inform, plan, control, and advise. How they do this – whether they constrain, unburden or complement – depends on the skills of the individual manager they are supporting. The Institute of Management Accounting and Control of WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management headed by Prof. Dr. Utz Schäffer and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Weber published a series of videos (both German and English) showing what controlling and controller’s role is. The videos also illustrate why companies need controllers and how controllers should see their managers. You can find the videos on the ICV Homepage (Know-how) or directly on the WHU Homepage. On the English ICV know-how-page there are also other materials in English: ICV statements, articles, thesis and case studies. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of them!

EUROPEAN UNION ECONOMY |
The industrial sector's share is stabilising |
Nearly four years ago, the European Commission set its sights on increasing the share of manufacturing in total gross value added from 15.5% at that time to 20% by 2020. This target will probably not be met. After all, in 2015 the share of manufacturing was only around 15.6% and thus scarcely higher than in 2012. However, industry's contribution to EU output has at least stopped decreasing since 2012. Furthermore, industrial gross value added has picked up (slightly) in the EU in recent years in both nominal and real terms. In a few member states, there have been highly contrasting developments in the significance of manufacturing in the economy. It is striking that the industry share in the three large Eastern Europe member states has increased sharply since 2012. Spain and Italy have reported modest g
ains. Germany has seen its industry share decline slightly in 2015; however, at 22.8% it still far outstrips the EU average.

KPMG STUDY ON CYBERSECURITY |
KPMG Consumer Loss Barometer: Cyber Attacks Cost Retailers Shoppers |
Consumers are wary of the increased frequency of cyber-attacks against retailers, and many are ready to walk away from their favorite retailers if a breach occurs. In fact, according to the 2016 KPMG Consumer Loss Barometer, in surveying 448 consumers, KPMG found that 19 percent said they would stop shopping at a retailer that had been a victim of a cybersecurity hack, even if the company took the necessary steps to remediate the issue. In addition to those who would abandon the retailer entirely, 33 percent of the consumers indicated that fears of further exposure of their personal information would prevent them from shopping at a breached retailer for at least three months. When asked which factors most likely contribute to a customer not returning – or delaying a return – to the stor
e, consumers surveyed cited a lack of a solid plan to prevent further attacks as a top factor.

NEW ROLAND BERGER STUDY |
Digitization in the construction sector |
The digital transformation is well and truly affecting all sectors of industry by now, influencing all links in the value chain and changing entire business models. In the construction industry, 93% of firms expect digitization to affect their corporate processes in their entirety. But few are taking corresponding action so far, as demonstrated by the findings of the new Roland Berger study, "Digitization in the construction industry – Building Europe's road to Construction 4.0". The Roland Berger experts canvassed the opinions of 40 construction companies and building materials firms from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, asking for their views on the potential of digitization and how far they have come with implementation. The survey found that less than 6% of construction firms use digital planning t
ools end to end. And 100% of respondents do not believe they have fully exploited their digitization potential.
