Hello,
with the Management Conference in Frankfurt on November 28, the ICV ended celebrating its 40th anniversary year. ICV chairman Siegfried Gänßlen and ICV board member Matthias von Daacke as conference moderator greeted the participants from 12 countries: 70 ICV work groups leaders and delegates who met at the Frankfurt Airport. First Siegfried Gänßlen presented the ICV goals 2016, then the three new ICV board members told how their first 100 days looked like. After that Malgorzata Podskarbi, ICV board member, showed how the license model for the new member countries will look like in the future. Work groups leaders discussed how to improve the quality of the workshops’ organization and gather new members. During the breaks there was plenty of time for brain storming and exchanging experiences.

OPERATIONS EFFICIENCY RADAR 2016 |
Companies apply numerous levers to stay successful in business in spite of economic slowdown |
The pace of global economic growth is slowing. Alongside falling economic indicators from emerging markets, notably China, many German firms are themselves revising their annual business forecasts downward. The rise in digitization and Industry 4.0 also serve to put numerous companies under pressure, with new market players from outside their industry making ever greater and faster inroads into traditional sectors. A new study, entitled "Operations Efficiency Radar – The Top Levers for the CFO Agenda 2016" by the International Controller Association and Roland Berger points out how companies should plan in these uncertain times and demonstrates how best to turn technology trends to their advantage. As many as 41 percent of the companies surveyed have plans to systematically address the process of transf
orming their business to an Industry 4.0 organization in the coming year – fully 14 percent more than last year. Yet at the same time, the number of firms that consider themselves well equipped to do so has fallen by five percentage points to just 28 percent. "This is probably partly down to the lack of support from suitable political initiatives like reforms or investments in infrastructure," says Conrad Günther, a Board Member at the ICV.

CHANGING FACE OF EUROPEAN FAMILY BUSINESS |
KPMG survey “European Family Business Trends” |
KPMG launches a new thought leadership report: "European Family Business Trends: Modern Times?", which reveals the "changing face" of European family businesses. Family businesses have proven to be both successful and resilient. Their importance for the economy is obvious. Take a look at Europe, where 14 million family businesses provide over 60 million jobs in the private sector (source: European Family Businesses). In various countries, they represent from 55% to 90% of all companies, and are present in businesses of all sizes, from corner shops to big corporations. 75% of European family businesses feel optimistic about the future for their business. While the overall EU economy may be seen as feeble and unstable, European family businesses are demonstrating increasing confidence and stable growth. O
ver half of the respondents (58%) cite a turnover increase in the last six months, and 46% - new recruitments. Backed by their confidence, three quarters (75%) of family businesses surveyed plan future growth and new investments in the year to come.

NEW ROLAND BERGER STUDY "KEEP YOUR MEGAPROJECT ON TRACK" |
Failure doesn't have to be inevitable |
Complex, technically challenging, multi-year, multi-billion and multi-stakeholder projects – in short "megaprojects" – are the modern flagships of industry. A new Roland Berger study entitled "Keep your Megaproject on Track" examines the root causes of failure and what can be done to guarantee safe passage for large investments projects. Airports, road and rail infrastructure and aircraft programs, to name but a few, face challenges from all directions and most importantly, they often lack precedent. 90% of megaprojects exceed budgets and timelines – where a sample of almost 1,000 megaprojects revealed that costs ran to an average of 55% over original budgets. The 2012 Olympic Games held in London were widely considered an example of a successful sporting event yet ran 118% and USD 5 bn over budget. On
the other side of the planet, China's highly controversial Three Gorges Dam hydroelectric project ran a massive 402% and USD 48 bn over budget.
